They are offsetting those benefits by targeting kids with more ads for their unhealthiest products, according to a report issued on Friday.

The findings, from the "Cereal Facts" study from Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, land amid growing alarm over diet-related health costs in the United States -- where nearly one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese.

Negative Calorie

Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center, applauded recipe tweaks that have improved the nutrition profile of cereals from companies like Kellogg Co, General Mills Inc and Post Holdings Inc, but said there is still ample room for improvement.

"It's not enough and the companies are still using all their marketing muscle to push their worst cereals on children," Brownell said.

Spending to promote child-targeted cereals totaled $264 million in 2011, up 33 percent from 2008, according to the study, which followed up a similar report from three years ago.

The report called out aggressive marketing of cereals like General Mills' Reese's Puffs, Kellogg's Froot Loops and Post's Fruity Pebbles to children. It said those brands rank among the lowest for nutrition and the highest for added sugar.

Regular Cheerios and Frosted Mini-Wheats have some of the highest nutrition scores, but ads for those products are more likely to be targeted at adults, the report said.

"Rudd tends to look at the glass half empty. I look at it as half-full and rising," said Elaine Kolish, director of the Council of Better Business Bureaus' Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI), a voluntary self-regulation program for food marketed to children.

Here are what I call the 5 Ps of eating and the attitude one must take to keep food in check!

Perspectives toward food

Ask yourself, Why do I eat? Most will say, I eat because I have to. Well, think about it. Do you?  If you eat just because you have to, then your choices will be more for taste. 

If you ate with the attitude that food was fuel, then how would you eat? You may be more likely to make a quality choice. Your attitude toward food is very important!

Pattern of eating

Do you drive the same way to work every day? Do you go to the same grocery store? Do you hang out with the same people most of the time? The same thing is true with your food. 

Chances are you eat at the same time, gobble up the same food types and in most cases, you take in roughly the same amount of food on a weekly basis?  Your body gets used to eating the same types and same amounts. As in exercise, it is really important to incorporate a variety of foods in our daily eating to keep it off guard, so to speak. 

Pushing your buttons

If you have good choices in the refrigerator, you will be more likely to eat that food. When healthy foods are unavailable, you will go out of your way to the pantry, pizza parlor, or fast food restaurant for immediate gratification.

Eating right has a lot to do with how you look at food, how much you eat and what you eat. Recognize if you have eating patterns. The patterns may be lifestyle, emotional, physically related or all the above. Pre-planning meals and shopping ahead solves a lot of the poor decision making. Cause of food poisoning during pregnancy


There can be many sources of food poisoning, but the most common among them are improper handling and keeping the food at room temperature for too long. These give rise to breeding of bacteria such as listeria, campylobacter, staphylococcus and salmonella. The risk of bacterial is particularly high in meat and eggs, besides unpasteurised juices and raw sprouts.

A very common cause of food poisoning is the listeria bacteria. It is most likely to affect pregnant women than other adults without any condition that predisposes them to its infection. Listeria grows mostly in refrigerator temperatures and thrives on soft cheeses, unpasteurised milk, and leftover luncheon and deli meats.

Always cook your food to 70 degrees for at least one minute before eating.

If you want to reduce the risk of listeriosis, avoid foods such as deli meats, chicken, pre-cooked fish undercooked meat and fish, improperly washed vegetables, salads and coleslaws.

In short, you need to practice good hygiene and avoid certain foods mentioned above that increase the risk of food poisoning. And, in case you do suffer from it, make sure you do not get dehydrated to minimise the health complications of your baby.

How to Hold the Cup of Tea

At the time of having tea made from a teabag, take it out from the cup and place it in a wash bowl or on a side saucer. You should not utilize the string to compress the teabag.
When you want to offer lemon with tea, give it if possible in slices rather than wedges. You can either offer a small fork or a lemon fork or can arrange a tea server, who will place a slice smartly in the saucer after he or she gives the tea in the cup.
